Reading response #4: Wake

This book starts of slow and the first chapter starts off with a scene of Thea and Penn. It describes the smell of blood that Thea can smell on Penn. Knowing it is late the girls must go but not before Penn gets what she wants, because after all she always gets what she wants. In the second chapter Gemma, Alex and Harper are introduced to us. Harper is Gemma's older sister, but Gemma is always described as the prettier one. Harper and Alex have been best friends for a long time, but recently Harper has secretly grown feelings for Alex. The only problem is it seems little sister and Alex have developed feelings for each other.  One night when Gemma's car breaks down before she can get her nightly swim in, Alex offers to give her a ride down to the bay. Alex agrees to get in the water with Gemma and race. Gemma being be the swimmer in town, of course wins. The two rest against a rock, and when Alex takes Gemma's hand neither move. Until the sounds and shadows of Penn, Thea, and Lexi, the three mysterious tourist girls. No one knows where they came from, but the fourth girl has suddenly disappeared. They are outsiders and they do not belong.

" Penn, Lexi, and Thea were sitting in a booth by the window at Pearl's. The other two girls were sipping their drinks, behaving like normal customers, but Penn stared out the glass, her dark eyes locked on harper. Her full lips turned up in a smile.. She put the car in drive and sped off so quickly she nearly clipped another driver, and that was very unlike her. AS she drove down to the docks, slowing her racing heart, Harper once again thought how much better it would be if Penn would just leave." This quote is meaning full because it really shows how Penn behaves, and how much affect she has on other people, almost like magic.

This is a picture of what Capri is supposed to look like. When Gemma and Alex go swimming, the cove is described as a pool of water surrounded by rock, cut off from the rest of the bay.

Reading  Response #3: Live through this

This book follows a sixteen year old girl named Coley. On the outside she seems to be a normal high school student, on the dance tame, great friends, and now a cute boyfriend named Reece. However, Coley has a deep dark secret and has never told a soul, Afraid of thee consequences. After stealing Coley and older brother away from their abusive father, her mother has spent her entire life protecting them . This secret would destroy her mother, but it is slowly destroying Coley. This book is very descriptive and has some mature content. I would not suggest this to someone who is offended by mature content such as this book contains. Mindi Scott (the author) does an amazing job in writing a book that pushes the boundaries.

Coley is described as a simple minded teen who is just living out her high school career. Although there is a lot more than meets the eye though. Coley does not have a normal relationship with her brother, and it causes havoc when Reece (her new boyfriend) comes into the picture. During a family ski vacation in Canada Coley's older brother, Brian, does something that changes Coley forever. Coley is a strong character even through her struggles. She has strong opinions and a big influence on her friends.

PechaKuha: Music moves me by: Breanne Tepler

Breanne does a really good job at staying on the topic, she describes what happened in her earlier years that lead her to music. She very well at speaking clearly, and her voice had a lot of power behind it. The viewer/listener can tell that what she is saying has a real meaning to her. Watching and hearing her you can hear the passion she has for music. One of the criticizes I have for Breanne would be to slow down a bit. She talks fast in some parts and it can be hard to understand.
I enjoyed the presentation, although it surprised me. When you first see the first photo, it is of Breanne standing with a guitar, smiling in front of a microphone. So it seems as if it will be a happy go lucky presentation. When she tells what got her started in guitar and music, it is a very sad story. Her dad played guitar and after he committed suicide she tried it out. When her younger brother died in a car crash 3 years later, that was her way of dealing with the pain. Her message of finding something that you're passionate about and sticking to it is very inspiring. I think that for my presentation it will be a struggle to fill 10 slides, but I'll get it done.

Love, True or Arranged in China

In china, marriage is looked upon as a way of succession, property inheritance, residential arrangement, and power structure. Americans tend to see marriage as a sign of love. One would marry the person that they love. However, China does not; it is more of social status. Many times parents will pick a daughter-in-law for their son. Parents will often marry out their the daughters to other families. Daughter will then belong to husband's family and have no rights or obligations to her biological parents. Only male offspring may use the father's surname to inherit family property. The Chinese culture is so different from ours here in the united states. It is really rather shocking.

Face to Face:

When I brought up the link to the website, I did not expect what I got. Hearing some of these stories is devastating. To imagine  all the hate some of these people receive is unbelievable to me. No one should ever feel alienated just because of their race. I know this stuff happens in day to day lives, but not in mine. The story that Satsuki Ina tells of waiting for the bus in the rain was awful. As the rain was pouring down, she decided to take a break and stand on a hooded porch area. A woman open her  window and yelled " Get off my porch, you dirty Jap." This really shocked me to the core. Sayema Hameed says " I felt fear for the first time in my life." She was to afraid to drive her car, to be alone, all because of racism.
These people were born and raised In America but instead they are treated like the enemy. All because of what? How they look, how they speak, so what they may be all of these things, Why should they be treated any different?

Reading Response #2: Of Poesidon

So far Galen has enrolled in Emma's high school, and they have every class together.  Emma has never meet someone like Galen, she feels a weird connection that she can not explain. Galen starts flirting with Emma, and it confuses her because he has tons of girls chasing after him already.  When Galen finally convinces Emma to get in the water with him,  he instant knows she is syrena. However, something is wrong, Emma cannot change into fin form. Throughout the book you learn that Emma has the gift of Poseidon, This allows her to communicate and control the fish. It is rare among the Syrena community and is dangerous. It also means that for Galen he cannot be with her, She is destined to marry His brother, The king.

The ending of this book has a really big twist that you will never see coming.

I chose this picture because in the book, Poseidon travels to a strange island of humans and lives there. He allows his men to mate with the women, but he longer they stay the weaker they get. A wave sent by the Syrena king wipes out most of the cross breed, killing the new kind. The book has a strong story line and is filled back history.

Reading Response #1: Of Poseidon

  1.           I love books but do not have much time to read. When I picked up this book the cover instantly intrigued me. A scene of the dark ocean water and a contrast of a girl in a white dress with her white hair shining in the water. She looks so mysterious and graceful, you later learn that this girl is Emma. Emma and her best friend on a vacation together in Destin, Florida. When Emma bumps into Galen, he is instantly intrigued by her. He feels a connection with Emma on land, something that is completely unheard in his kind. Galen is a Syrena, a dangerous but beautiful mermaid creature. When Galen meets Emma he thinks she is of his kind, his sister thinks other wise. When Galen witnesses Emma trying to saving her friend, he sees inhuman things happening. How could it be when she acts so human. He decides to follow her to Jersey, Emma 's home town. He needs to know what she is, and fast.

When I picture a Syrena, I think of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger tides. The author does not really describe what they look like in the book. However, this is what I tend to think of. In the movie a boat full of pirates get attacked by Syrena's. The mermaids lure them in with their mesmerizing song then attack.

" Deep inside, I feel I'm watching my life float away on that glistening board. When I peer down into the water; I feel I'm watching Chloe's life float away with the faint trail of blood, blurred and weakened by each passing wave. The choice is clear." This is Emma's thoughts after her best friend (Chloe) is attacked by a shark. I like this quote because it really shows how much Emma loves and cares about Chloe.
